Colonoscopy Bowel Preparation – Prepkit-C
Three days before the test:
- IRON TABLETS must be stopped
Two days before the test:
Adopt a low fibre diet by eliminating cereal, nuts, grainy bread, seeds, fruit & vegetables. You can eat fish/meat/rice/pasta/eggs/potatoes/white bread, dairy products.
If you suffer from constipation, then you need additional preparation, eg 1 tablespoon Epsom salts dissolved in orange juice on this night.
One day before the test:
- From the time you wake up you can only have clear fluids (fluid you can see through) ie. no solid food, no dairy products including milk and ice cream.
- All medications should be taken except for aspirin/arthritis medicines, which should be stopped 10 days before the test.(check with your local doctor first).
- Dissolve each packet of Pico-prep in a glass of warm water and put them in the fridge for later use. Dissolve the packet of Glycoprep-C in 1 litre of warm water then put it in the fridge also.
- YOU MAY HAVE:
Water, fruit juice with no pulp eg. clear apple, pear or grape juice (but not tomato, carrot or orange), clear soups, stock cubes, barley sugars, tea and coffee without milk, soft drinks, cordials and lucozade. Jelly and jelly babies are permissible but avoid red/ black/purple ones as they darken the bowel.
- IT IS IMPORTANT TO DRINK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID DEHYDRATION.
- At 3 pm: (or after returning home from work) drink one glass of Pico-prep over 15 minutes. Then drink 2 glasses of water. Keep drinking plenty of fluid. (If you get bad nausea or vomiting, drink the second glass of Pico-Prep over one hour, after the nausea & vomiting has settled).
- At 6pm (or 3 hours after the first glass) Remove the made up 1 litre of Glycoprep-C from the refrigerator. You should try to drink a glass of this preparation every 15 minutes and finish taking the 1 litre within 1 hour. If you start to feel nauseated while drinking the preparation, drink the preparation more slowly.
- At 9 pm: (or 3-4 hours after the 2nd dose) drink the second glass of Pico- prep slowly, followed by 2 glasses of water.
- The response varies but the prep should begin to produce diarrhoea within 1-2 hours after each glass. It is normal to have some watery motion the next morning.
- Do not take the second prep if you feel very unwell.
- YOU MAY DRINK CLEAR FLUIDS UP UNTIL 6 HOURS BEFORE THE TEST, THEN NOTHING, INCLUDING NO WATER.
- Sorbent Clean and Fresh or Kleenex Fresh wet wipes reduce anal pain from wiping.
